United Hero's Healthy Goal
Former Newcastle United skipper Bobby Moncur, who led the team to a Fairs Cup win in 1969, is busy exploding the myth that exercise isn't for older people.
Three months ago the 57-year-old, who suffers from arthritis in his left ankle and has a knee injury, signed up with personal trainer Steve Denby.
He agreed to let the Chronicle follow his progress. He said: "Heartwise I'm pretty good but I carry more fat than I should especially on my back and stomach."
Steve runs Bodyguard gym from a unit in Jesmond House, off Clayton Road in Newcastle, and specialises in a more elderly clientele ranging from 50 and above.
He carried out a battery of tests on Bobby and in just three months he has lost weight and come on in leaps and bounds.
He has lost 1.5 kilos (just over 3 lbs) and his blood pressure and resting heart rate have gone down - good signs of an overall improvement in fitness.
His lung capacity and aerobic fitness have also improved. Steve said: "I'm very proud of him. He only comes once a week but his balance and core strength are a lot better. Bobby also plays a lot of golf which keeps his joints mobile."
