The side lunge is another great exercise that incorporates a different plane of motion other than the Sagittal. So many of your day-to-day movements incorporates the Sagittal plane including walking, running, sitting, biking, and going up the stairs. Using different planes of motion such as the frontal plane is what keeps you mobile, healthy, and able to execute more advanced movements. The side lunge is a great exercise because it works the gluteus medius which are important stabiliser muscles for the hip joint. Moving in a different direction also helps you work your quadriceps muscles from another angle. Mastering the side lunge will help you build strength and stability in each leg individually as well as improve your balance.
